The Paper Trail & The Picture Show: Life Lately
Hello everyone, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet!
First and foremost - A big thank you to everyone who has contacted me, via this site!
I’ve literally been inundated with review requests and emails, whether for personal writing advice or just questions relating to screenwriting and formulation.
I’ve already responded to most, so please check your spam folder just in case.
It’s been a while since my last update, and if I’m honest, that’s because my life has recently felt like a split-screen movie. On one side, there’s the fast-paced, high-stakes world of the legal system; on the other, the quiet, immersive glow of independent cinema.
It’s been a whirlwind, but I’m finally catching my breath to share what’s been happening.
Order in the Court: My Life as a Legal Secretary
For the past few months, I’ve traded my casual wear for blazers and my notebook for legal pads. I’ve been working as a legal law secretary on a significant court case, and let me tell you—it is a completely different world.
There is something incredibly grounding about being in the room where major decisions are made. Between managing complex filings and keeping up with the rapid-fire pace of testimony, I’ve gained a whole new level of respect for the precision the law requires. It’s a lot of long hours and meticulous detail, but there’s a strange kind of "administrative adrenaline" that comes with a high-profile trial!
Indie Gems: Independent Film Reviews
To balance out the rigid structure of the courtroom, I’ve been diving deep into my first love: Independent Film.
Lately, and when time permits, I’ve been reviewing independent films, a few of which are incredibly well-made and fully deserve to be showcased and positively critiqued.
I’ve started a series of independent film reviews focusing on stories that usually get drowned out by the big blockbusters. There is so much raw talent in the indie scene right now—filmmakers who are taking massive risks with tiny budgets.
Mainstream movies tell us how to feel; independent films ask us how we feel. I’m currently working on a "Top 10 Must-Watch Indies of the Season" list, so keep your eyes peeled for that post coming soon!
What Else Is New?
Aside from the law and the lens, a few other things have been keeping me busy:
I’ve been writing brand new short story ideas, which I am in the process of trying to convince indie writer and director Trev Hayward to direct!
However, his schedule is incredibly busy for this year already so we’ll see if anything comes of it.
I shall, of course post all updates here.
Life is a bit of a balancing act right now, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Whether I’m documenting a deposition or dissecting a director’s cut, I’m learning that every story—legal or cinematic—matters.
Thanks for following along on this journey with me. What have you all been up to lately?
Let me know via the Contact Section here on my site.
Thanks, and my very best,
Emily.
